What you will do: The Cornell University Companion Animal Hospital Emergency and Critical Care Service (ECCS), provides high quality veterinary care to both emergent and critically ill patients while creating a positive learning experience for veterinary students and house officers. The section is looking for additional Emergency Receiving Technicians (ERT) to anchor and facilitate the daily operations of the emergency service. Specific duties will include: Provide high quality technical support to incoming emergency patients, their owners and referring veterinarians, as well as the ECC clinicians and students; Triage emergent patients (vis telephone and in-hospital); Perform technical procedures as directed by ECC clinicians; General nursing care of emergency patients to include maintaining a clean and comfortable holding area, walking and basic patient cleanliness; Anchor the ECCS by facilitating clear communication and acting as a resource for students, staff, interns and residents; Ensure appropriate documentation in the medical record, generation of requests, and billing for services rendered, using EzyVet; Teach students and house officers in the clinical as well as laboratory setting. Be a detail oriented person who can make good decisions, respond quickly and calmly to crises, multi-task and think creatively while maintaining exceptional standards for patient care. Promote excellent customer service by coordinating procedures and communicating a sense of assurance to clients. Develop and maintain excellent working relationships and professionalism within the Companion Animal Hospital, including other team members, students, other service technicians and staff, clinicians and clients. The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to ensure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception. Schedule will include evening/overnight shifts, as well as weekends and holidays to meet business needs. Cross-training with other services to support business continuity will be expected as time/business need allows. If business needs change, a position/individual may be realigned within the CUHA to a different shift or service. What are the Qualifications? Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology, NYS Licensure or eligibility required Candidate must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes, but are not limited to, stressful situations, prolonged standing and kneeling, lifting and restraining animals that may exceed 50 pounds. Must be able to work flexible schedule to include days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holiday shifts. Technical ability to include compassionate handling and restraint of a variety of species; strong patient assessment and monitoring skills, the ability to perform supportive and invasive therapies and emergency procedures. Effective communication skills and enthusiasm for teaching both students and house officers. The ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding environment. A high level of initiative, excellent organizational skills, exceptional judgment and critical thinking skills. The ability to prevent and resolve conflicts in a professional and effective manner.
