Job Description




    Veterinary Technicians, Assistants, and Receptionists are the Veterinarians right hand. Working closely with or independent from the veterinarian to accomplish tasks related to health care for our animal patients, and their owners.  This would include giving injections or medications, administering treatments, refilling prescriptions, monitoring patients recovering from surgery, etc.  You will be tasked with making decisions within the guidelines established by the veterinarian.  You must also be familiar with equipment to take radiographs, electrocardiograms, perform blood tests, administer iv therapy, etc.

     Receptionists are the customer-relations experts in a veterinary practice. They are the clients’ first impression of the practice, on the phone or in person. The receptionist answers telephones, greets clients, prepares patient files, escorts clients and patients to exam rooms, receives/relays client correspondence, and updates client financial records. Receptionists must possess strong organizational skills, excellent telephone, in-person communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Receptionists must have compassion for animals and their owners in addition to understanding the stress that patients and clients endure. The exceptional receptionist has the ability to diffuse negative client situations and foster client bonding. Job may require about 20 to 40 hours per week, evenings and Sundays.  Current staffing concerns due to illness will affect the number of hours.


    REPORTS TO: Officer Manager then Practice Owner



    • Registered Veterinary Technician or Technician in training preferred, but not required.
    • Customer Service background desirable but not required.
    • Typing skills required.
    • Computer knowledge required; comfortable with Word, keyboarding, and use of communication tools such as email, Excel and PowerPoint.



    • Significant experience with basic office functions in a busy office environment.
    • Previous technician, assistant or receptionist and veterinary practice experience is desirable.



    The receptionist must be able to:

    • Be flexible in attitude and work habits as kennel work will be part of your job*
    • Quickly learn how to pronounce, know the meaning of and spell commonly used veterinary terms.
    • Perform basic computer skills, including typing.
    • Have had experience with basic office functions in a busy work environment. **
    • Physical Effort:Work requires lifting and carrying of animals, boxes or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.; requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time. **
    • Working conditions:May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.  You will be cleaning cages, walking dogs, and performing housekeeping duties.
    • Emotional Intelligence: Posses the ability to identify and assess the emotional state of others. While controlling your emotional response to a stressful situation, so that you can tailor your response to best handle a stressful situation and solve a problem.
    • Positive Attitude:Maintain and project a positive attitude about the hospital, clients, patients, and co-workers. Avoid gossiping, condemning, judging, and making negative comments or participating in such discussions. Negative feelings or concerns should be discussed with the Office Manager. Instead of complaining about problems, strive to be part of the solution.
    • Cultural Dexterity:Understand that in a multicultural environment that thinking is required prior to speaking or acting. The ethnicity, gender or religious implications of what you are about to say or do can have more implications than you may realize.
    • Teamwork:You are working as part of a health care team; your actions should be consistent with that knowledge. Doing your job, not leaving work for others to do, helping others, and being flexible when difficult circumstances arise. Updating the replacing receptionist or technician on who is here, pending transactions, or other useful information that will make the shift change easier.
    • Follow Through: Complete tasks that are assigned are a very high priority for this practice. “Half-way” work is a waste of time and causes a huge decrease in productivity because others have to complete what you started to complete what you did not, and then must do their assigned job after completing the task you should have done.

    Wage Range

    • The range for the position is dependent on experience.

    Job Type: Part-time.  Salary: $13.00 to $15.00 /hour
