The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies is looking for a Veterinarian Program Manager to support our government customer located in Fort Detrick, MD

The Veterinarian Program Manager will provide supervisory, management and reporting activities, conduct Veterinary Medical Duties (facility veterinarian) and provide study support and consultation to the IRF investigators. Provide full-time veterinary support to the animal care and use program, as directed by the DCR Animal Program Director, and will share on-call services responsibilities. There will be 1 direct report, 3 secondary and 15 3rd level reports.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Must qualify to work in a high containment environment, which entails DOJ security background check, meeting NIH DOHS physical requirements, and participation in the NIH Biosurety program.
- Represents Comparative Medicine (CM) at facility level meetings; interacts with IRF leadership, lab managers, and science staff to coordinate Comparative Medicine study support.
- Manage Comparative Medicine Program; supervise animal facility manager and other contractor personnel.
- Report to Laulima Operations Director regarding contract specific research support activities, workflow, work assignment, and personnel management issues.
- Interacts closely with NIAID DCR APD regarding program direction and implementation of compliant laboratory animal program IAW NIH policy and directives.
- Provides training to new hires in the duties and responsibilities of animal care and facility operations.
- Maintain CM/Pathology emergency/weekend/holiday duty roster and share on-call clinical duties with DCR APD
- As a research team member, facilitate comparative medicine core support; advise investigators on animal models and animal health issues related to ongoing studies; participate in endpoint determinations; provide medical interpretation of clinical data; bridge the in-life and post-life phases of animal studies
- Provides quality assurance to include animal health surveillance, monitoring of environmental parameters and effectiveness of facility sanitation.
- Serve on IACUC as primary alternate to the attending veterinarian
- Reviews, comprehends and complies with all SOP's and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.
- Maintains accurate records of animal health and housing as well as support areas as required by Institute and facility.
- Operates equipment and uses supplies according to safety guidelines; performs general housekeeping and adheres to safety procedures.
- Maintains consistent practice of general company and safety policies and procedures and MSDS guidelines, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances. Performs all duties in compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
- Maintains required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.
- If necessary, communicating directly with the manufacturers on problems with the equipment.
- Perform routine veterinary medical duties, including physical examinations, health assessment of research animals, animal procurement, monitor routine husbandry, diagnostic evaluations, oversee maintenance of colony health assessment, routine observations and medical records maintenance, and facilitate study-specific animal manipulations, surgical and imaging support.
- Consults with imaging team to evaluate and interpret animal images; make medical and research-related recommendations based on image interpretations
- Present and/or publish peer-reviewed scientific findings
- Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures
- Performs other duties as assigned.
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Knowledge of Federal, state and NIH regulations and policies to ensure regulatory compliance such as OLAW, USDA, DEA, and AAALAC accreditation
- Specialty trained in anatomic pathology with several years’ experience in diagnostic and research pathology a plus.
- Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment.
- Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with clients, customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Demonstrated ability to train new employees to competency in all aspects of animal care and facility cagewash performance.
- Computer literacy in word processing and database record keeping helpful.
- Prior or current experience conducting work in BSL3/4 is highly desirable.
- Ability to read, write speak and understand English.
DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
- Doctoral degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.) from an accredited veterinary school, or acceptable international equivalent in veterinary medicine. Should have completed an ACLAM approved residency program or have substantial experience in the field and be board eligible or board certified by ACLAM.
- Board-certified veterinarian licensed in one U.S. state with at least seven years of experience gained while working in multi-biosafety level animal program(s), four of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
- Experience in specialty areas such as rodent and rabbit facilities management, nonhuman primate facilities management, barrier management, hazard containment and animal facility data management are desirable.
- Must qualify to work in a high containment environment, which entails DOJ security background check, meeting NIH DOHS physical requirements, and participation in the NIH Biosurety program.
CITIZENSHIP/SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Individual must be able to meet the requirements for Public Trust Level 5b. For this level, candidates must complete and pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) with fingerprinting, and a Minimum Background Investigation (MBI).
